What Counts

You don’t have to be overwhelmed by diamond lingo. Learn the four C’s: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight.

Cut

The most important characteristic of a diamond. Cut determines the brilliance, or “fire” emanating from within the gem. Cut is not shape. Shape is round, emerald or pear, for example. The Ideal Cut, available only in round shape, maximizes the brilliance of the diamond, and is the most spectacular cut. Premium Cut, in a round shape, can be almost as brilliant as an Ideal Cut, and is for the discerning consumer. Very Good cuts are slightly different in proportions, usually to create a larger diamond. VG reflects most of the internal light. Good Cut reflects much of the light, and will show off the brilliance within. A G Cut will be larger, as the cutter chooses not to cut off as much of the rough diamond needed to make a Premium Cut gem. Fair and Poor do not reflect as much light, and are generally found in lower cost, mass produced jewellery. The cost for “Cut” tops out at Premium, and reduces down to Poor Cut. Premium and Ideal Cut Canadian diamonds are considered the finest gems available by international diamond experts.

Carat Weight

Carat is a standard measure of weight, not size.

Colour

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades colour from D (totally colourless) to Z – (yellow). True colourless stones are D,E, and F, according to the GIA.

Clarity

Refers to identifying characteristics both in and on the surface of the diamond. A 10X loupe is used to grade for clarity. Grades range from Internally Flawless, completely free of internal blemishes, to Imperfect 3, diamonds with heavy inclusions visible to the naked eye.

Watch for this Symbol

If you decide that a government certified diamond gives you the added assurance you need, then look for brands that come with the Government of the Northwest Territories’ distinct emblem, official printed documentation and the registration number minutely engraved on the stone’s girdle. These diamonds may cost a fraction more, but they are the only ones certified by government to be mined, cut and polished in Canada. Ask for government certified Canadian diamonds and accept nothing less.
